Job Description

United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Homeownership Case Manager to support Detroit residents from economically underserved communities pursuing or sustaining homeownership. The Homeownership Case Manager works closely with clients throughout the homeownership journey, including eligibility documentation, post-purchase stabilization, financial counseling, property tax education, and coordination with internal legal, repair, and account teams to ensure long-term success and stability.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive housing intakes and needs assessments.

  • Assist clients in developing housing goals and individualized action plans.

  • Gather and organize documentation for housing applications, eligibility, and recertifications.

  • Identify suitable housing options aligned with client needs, income, and legal circumstances.

  • Coordinate relocation logistics including scheduling viewings and arranging transportation.

  • Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to ensure integrated service delivery.

  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of available housing units and community resources.

  • Build and sustain relationships with landlords and property managers to expand housing access.

  • Accurately document case activity in UCHC’s case management systems.

  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and service improvement initiatives.

  • Support program development and fulfill other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of tenant rights, housing codes, and landlord responsibilities.

  • Familiarity with rent withholding laws and escrow fund management practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse populations.

  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with legal services, government agencies, and community organizations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems.


Case Management & Referrals:

  • Provide case management support to homeownership program participants, including assistance with document collection, budgeting, and post-purchase stability.

  • Refer purchasers to appropriate internal services, including tax foreclosure prevention, home repair programs, or legal services if issues arise.

  • Maintain regular communication with clients to support long-term homeownership and successful land contract completion or deed transfer.

  • Offer case management services to assist tenants throughout the rent withholding process.

  • Refer tenants to internal housing stability resources, including financial assistance and long-term support services.

  • Maintain consistent communication to support ongoing housing stability.

Legal Coordination:

  • Coordinate with UCHC’s Legal Department and external legal partners to support purchasers facing property disputes, compliance issues, or forfeiture risk.

  • Assist with document preparation and case follow-up as needed.

  • Collaborate with legal service providers to support tenants in resolving disputes related to withheld rent, uncompleted repairs, or eviction proceedings.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date case records for each homeownership client in Salesforce or UCHC’s designated CRM.

  • Track progress toward deed transfers, loan repayments, and repair eligibility.

  • Support grant reporting by generating summaries of case activity, risks, and resolutions.

  • Maintain accurate, detailed records of all rent withholding cases, escrow fund activity, repair status, and tenant/landlord communications.

Generate reports on program outcomes, including tenant retention rates, repair compliance, and unresolved disputes.


Additional Requirements:

  • Regular travel within Detroit for client visits, housing inspections, and partner meetings.

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for client emergencies or relocations.

  • Commitment to housing justice, equity, and trauma-informed care.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will believe in UCHC’s mission and demonstrate a commitment to community-based housing solutions. The individual will also have:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in social work, Human Services, or a related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • 2-3 years of experience in case management, housing navigation, or related services; nonprofit direct service preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and proof of current vehicle insurance.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and cloud-based systems.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

  • Organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple priorities.

  • Experience working with individuals or families experiencing homelessness is preferred.

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations or in housing stability programs strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with Detroit’s housing landscape, tenant rights, and community resources.

  • Bilingual skills or lived experience relevant to the community served are a plus.

  • Competency in Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook), comfort using cloud-based systems and case tracking software, basic data systems; Salesforce experience preferred.

  • Commitment to equity, housing justice, and trauma-informed service delivery.

Schedule: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday with flexibility.

United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) is a nonprofit comprehensive housing assistance organization that has provided a variety of housing-related services to Detroit's low- income residents since 1973.

UCHC has worked with tenants, homesteaders, homeowners, the homeless, community organizations rebuilding neighborhoods and providing affordable housing, religious, civil rights, labor, and housing advocacy organization to improve, preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities for low-income Detroiters.
