Make it Home Community Organizer

Position overview:

The Make it Home Community Organizer will work to ensure that the participants of the Make it Home (MiH) program are successful in becoming homeowners and retaining homeownership. This position will report to the Director of Tax Foreclosure Prevention and will work closely with repair services, land contract support, finance components, and as other staff of United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) and Michigan Legal Services (MLS). This job includes a mixture of in-office and off-site work.


Responsibilities include:

  • Contacting all participants in the MIH program that are in good standing with UCHC.

  • In some cases contacting participants in the MIH program who may not be in good standing or who may need support completing the program requirements.

  • Conducting site visits to homes in the MIH program a few days per week.

  • Develop resources in various communities throughout the city to provide assistance.

  • Develop a system for ongoing contacts with MIH residents through newsletters, e-mails, or other means to update them on available resources.

  • Convene regular meetings or events with MIH participants to provide programs of interest and support. Events should rotate in various communities in Detroit to have maximum opportunity for participants to attend.

  • Seek feedback through surveys and questionnaires to determine the types of services and support needed to help stabilize MIH households.

  • Coordinate information and needs with other UCHC components so as to provide maximum assistance and further the effectiveness of the program. 

  • Respond to other needs and assignments as may become necessary and requested by the Director of Tax Foreclosure Prevention or the Executive Director.


Preferred qualifications:

The successful candidate will believe in UCHC’s mission and demonstrate a passion for driving the organization’s growth. They will also have:

  • Familiarity with Detroit and various neighborhoods and programs.

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.

  • Good organization and people skills.

  • Skilled use of office automation software (Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Sheets, & Drive and related apps).

  • Comfortability with using social media platforms.

  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a group.

  • The ability to learn quickly and to balance multiple priorities.

  • Communication skills for conveying relevant information to people in different circumstances.

  • Access to a vehicle and smartphone.


Personal characteristics:

  • A charismatic communicator, both in writing and speaking.

  • A demonstrated commitment to the community.

  • A good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input and feedback from many sources, and able to act on information to develop community engagement.

  • A hard worker with a high energy level; a “doer” with a willingness to work hands-on.

  • Ability to tolerate a high degree of ambiguity, and to negotiate with people having sharply defined opinions while maintaining positive, respectful relationships.


Full-time position with benefits. Hourly rate commensurate with experience. 
Schedule: Primarily 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

The organization has worked with tenants, homesteaders, homeowners, the homeless, community organizations rebuilding neighborhoods and providing affordable housing, religious, civil rights, labor and housing advocacy organization to improve, preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities for low-income Detroiters.
