Position overview:
Responsible for developing sustainable support, the Director of Development and Communications will work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team across all fundraising efforts and communications activities for UCHC. The candidate will also lead proactive media outreach and marketing activities.


Responsibilities include:

  • Developing a long-term fundraising strategy, infrastructure, and donor pipeline, including:

    • Segmentation of donors (individual, business, foundation)

    • Level (community giving, various major gift levels, planned giving)

    • Fund type (in kind, capital projects and infrastructure build-out, annual operating fund, restricted gifts for specific purposes, education, endowment).

  • Preparing and writing grant applications and proposals.

  • Establishing an institutional giving program for sponsorships, corporate gifts, foundation solicitations for restricted and unrestricted giving.

  • Establishing clear standards for stewardship, donor recognition, and institutional sponsorship, with particular emphasis on the proper use of logos, brands, naming and other recognition opportunities.

  • Leading a communications strategy targeting donors and clients – identify needs for different stakeholder groups, develop and distribute messaging in a timely and consistent fashion.

  • Developing and managing press relationships and associated marketing efforts to increase awareness of our work.

  • Promoting and managing special event preparation for clients, donors and media.


Preferred qualifications:
The successful candidate will believe in UCHC’s mission and demonstrate a passion for driving the organization’s growth. They will also have:

  • Broad-based knowledge of development campaign activities, including: digital marketing, direct mail, event planning and management, direct solicitations, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, coordinate and support others.

  • Experience managing storytelling efforts across different platforms is desirable (including website content and social media channels).

  • 5+ Years of fundraising experience with organizations of comparable size.

  • Bachelors’ degree preferred.

  • A charismatic communicator, both in writing and speaking.

  • Ability to recognize the alignment of donors’ interests with the value of UCHC’s programs, services and events; ability to be the face of fundraising when appropriate.

  • A good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input and feedback from many sources, and able to act on information to develop increased support.

  • A hard worker with a high energy level; a “doer” with a willingness to work hands on in developing and executing a variety of development and advancement activities.

  • Ability to tolerate a high degree of ambiguity, and to negotiate with people having sharply defined opinions while maintaining positive, respectful relationships.


Full-time position with benefits. Hourly rate commensurate with experience. 
Schedule: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) is a nonprofit comprehensive housing assistance organization, which has provided a variety of housing-related services to Detroit's low-income residents since 1973.

The organization has worked with tenants, homesteaders, homeowners, the homeless, community organizations rebuilding neighborhoods and providing affordable housing, religious, civil rights, labor and housing advocacy organization to improve, preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities for low-income Detroiters.

Because of its long history and significant expertise as a comprehensive housing services provider in Michigan, the organization is frequently asked to provide advice to other organizations in communities across Southeast Michigan.

All service are provided to income-eligible families and individuals free of charge.
