DIRECTOR, COMMUNICATIONS AND GRANTS MANAGEMENT

Position overview

The United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) Director, Communications and Grants Management reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the management and execution of grant renewals and reporting, identifying potential new funding sources, relationships with current and potential funding sources, and outreach efforts to increase awareness of the organization. 

 

Responsibilities include

  • Developing systems for grant management and reporting to effectively measure successes that can be effectively communicated to existing and potentially new funders.

  • Through grant development, assist in the planning and growth of new programs to comprehensively address the needs of low-income households assisted by the organization.

  • Assisting in fundraising and grant writing to find new resources to support the work.

  • Engage in media and community outreach to promote the organization.

  • Represent UCHC in presenting the mission and values of the organization to media, funders, governmental entities, and others.

  • Assist in building partnerships and establishing relationships with funders, political and community leaders, and the non-profit community and city-wide organizations, churches and other religious institutions, unions, civic organizations, and others. 

  • Perform other such tasks as may be necessary and assigned by the Executive Director.

 

Preferred qualifications

The Director, Communications and Grants Management must be thoroughly committed to the organization's mission. In addition:

  • Bachelor’s degree with some management experience.  

  • Ability to work and make decisions independently; maintain and manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to effectively communicate concepts and ideas to and collaborate with partner organizations and UCHC team.

  • Ability to effectively listen to and understand ideas and challenges, and ask appropriate follow-up questions.

  • Ability to develop interpersonal relationships and work well with others.

  • Skilled use of office automation software (Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Sheets, & Drive)

  • Comfortability with using social media platforms.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs dedicated to improving conditions for low-income persons and households with some experience in low-income housing issues.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

  • Understanding of the organization’s mission and daily component functions.

  • A charismatic communicator, both in writing and speaking.

  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.

  • Ability to recognize the alignment of donors’ interests with the value of UCHC’s programs, services, and events; ability to be the face of fundraising when appropriate.

  • A good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input and feedback from many sources, and able to act on information to develop increased support.

  • A hard worker with a high energy level; a “doer” with a willingness to work hands-on in developing and executing a variety of development and advancement activities.

Specifics

Full-time position with benefits. Salary commensurate with experience. 
Schedule: Primarily 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday

United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) is a nonprofit comprehensive housing assistance organization, which has provided a variety of housing-related services to Detroit's low-income residents since 1973.

The organization has worked with tenants, homesteaders, homeowners, the homeless, community organizations rebuilding neighborhoods and providing affordable housing, religious, civil rights, labor and housing advocacy organization to improve, preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities for low-income Detroiters.

Because of its long history and significant expertise as a comprehensive housing services provider in Michigan, the organization is frequently asked to provide advice to other organizations in communities across Southeast Michigan.

All service are provided to income-eligible families and individuals free of charge.
