Dear UCHC Make It Home Candidates,

As of Friday, May 7, 2021, we have learned that the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office has delayed foreclosures on all occupied properties until 2022.

While this is potentially good news for owner-occupants facing property tax foreclosure, this also means that Make It Home is no longer an option for non-owner occupants (tenants/renters) this year.

We know this is hugely disappointing for many of our clients who have been waiting for an opportunity to become homeowners for many years. We continue to hope for better outcomes in 2022.

What does this mean for you?

  • Ownership of your home will not change due to tax foreclosure this year.

  • If you are a tenant paying rent to an active landlord, continue to pay rent. If you are able, try to save anything additional in a dedicated savings account.

  • If you are not paying rent to an active landlord, make sure to set aside housing money (estimate one-third of your monthly income) in a dedicated savings account.

  • To prepare for Make It Home 2022, the most important next step is to fill out a Savings Plan with a Make It Home Counselor and save money in a dedicated savings account.

CERA: Eviction, Rent, and Utility Payment Help for Tenants

  • The COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA) program is designed to keep Detroit residents who fell behind on their rent during COVID-19 in their homes. Financial assistance is available for renters with their past due rent and utilities. Free legal representation may also be available for renters with court cases. Attend one of UCHC's CERA workshops on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Learn more here!

  • If you are a renter with a court order summons, complaint, or judgment, please call 313-355-3352.

  • If you are a renter who is behind on rent and/or utilities and have a past due notice, please call 866-313-2520.

Make It Home Walk-In Office Hours (May 17-July 30)

  • We know this is a confusing and stressful time. We plan to be available to answer your questions and concerns in-person over the next few weeks, as well as over the phone and via email/text.

  • We will be hosting Make It Home Walk-In Office Hours at UCHC (2727 2nd Ave) on Mondays from 2-5pm, Wednesdays from 2-5pm, and Fridays from 10am-1pm & 2-5pm.

  • A counselor will be available to help answer your questions regarding these changes and make a Savings Plan for MIH 2022.

Remember, paying the taxes or making repairs will not make you the homeowner of your home. Try your best to limit repairs and keep utilities on. Be safe and take care.
